‘Foreign students, residents and doctoral degree candidates’ Sector
The Sector for foreign students, residents and doctoral degree candidates performs comprehensive administrative services for students and doctoral degree candidates which comprises the following:
- Initial filing of documents for enrollment of first-year students in correspondence with the special requirements for foreign students enrollment.
- Acquainting of students with their rights and obligations according to the Regulations for the preparation and organization of education in MU-Sofia.
- Submitting comprehensive and precise information on all issues in connection with decisions of a student’s status and education
- Ensuring prompt payment of tuition fees by foreign students, doctoral degree candidates and residents. Administrative service for the residents is provided by the Rector’s Office
- Exercising direct control over the education process of foreign students
- Issuing of all necessary documents ( student’s book, ID card, certificate for hostel, certificate for ‘Passport Services’, etc.
TUITION FEES
TUITION FEES FOR THE EDUCATION OF FOREIGN CITIZENS FOR 2009/2010, ACCORDING TO ACT OF THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS №117/16.05.2009, ARE AS FOLLOWS:
ANNUAL TUITION FEES:
- for students of medicine (in Bulgarian) – 5000 EUR
- for students of medicine (in English) – 6000 EUR
- for ergotherapists – 3000 EUR
- for doctoral degree candidates (in Bulgarian):
- full-time – 5000 EUR
- part-time – 4000 EUR
- Language courses:
- for students of medicine (in Bulgarian) – 3500 EUR
- for students of medicine (in English) – 4500 EUR
- for ergotherapists – 3500 EUR
Foreign citizens with citizenship of two countries, one of which Bulgarian, can study at a price, amounting to 50 % of the annual fee.

Enrollment of foreign students for education in the Medical University – Sofia
Since 1999-2000 academic year the Medical Faculty - Sofia has provided education in English with an intensive course in Bulgarian. Foreign students with knowledge of English, which they prove with an entry test, can apply for this kind of education.
Foreign students are enrolled in MU-Sofia in correspondence to the Law of Higher Education and the Regulations for the State Requirements for the enrollment of Bulgarian and foreign students in the Republic of Bulgaria.
Foreign students are educated in study groups with Bulgarian students according to approved syllabuses and programs for the specialty of Medicine.
Documents needed for enrollment of foreign students:
- Application or an application form containing short CV data
- Copy of the document for secondary education and its supplement with the grades
- Document, issued by the competent authorities, certifying the applicant’s right to continue his/her education in the institutions for higher education in the country where he has graduated from secondary school.
- University transcript – for students who do not apply for the full course of education
- Medical certificate issued within one month of the date of application
- Copy of the citizenship documents- for applicants with two citizenships, one of which is Bulgarian
- Four photos.
The documents in points 2,3,4 and 5 must be translated in Bulgarian, legalized and stamped by the Embassy of R Bulgaria in the country from which the person applies.
The special subjects, which must have been studied and must be present in the diploma for applicants for the Medical Faculty – Sofia are chemistry and biology and the minimum average grade must not be less than 62% of the maximum possible grades.
Since 2004/2005 academic year the Medical Faculty – Sofia has started a Bachelor program in the specialty of ‘Medical Rehabilitator Ergotherapist’. The duration of education in this specialty is nine semesters.
The foreign students pass a one-year preparatory course in the Bulgarian language at the Department of language training and student’s sports at MU-Sofia after paying the corresponding tuition fee. The specialized education during this year ends with exams according to the syllabus (in Bulgarian, chemistry and biology) and with receiving certificates for the successful graduation from the course.
The preparatory course in Bulgarian for residents and doctoral degree candidates has a duration of 6 months – 560 hours.
The preparatory academic year is taken in DLTSS of MU-Sofia and includes education in the Bulgarian Language, biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology. Foreigners with sufficient knowledge of Bulgarian sit an exam on a list of topics developed by the DLTSS and have to take hours only in the special subjects.
The documents are to be submitted until September 30 of the corresponding preparatory year in person, through an intermediary or at the following address: Department “Students' Education”, Medical University, Rector's Office, 15 Acad. Iv.Geshov blvd., Sofia 1431, Bulgaria.
The processed documents are sent to the Ministry of education and science, which issues a Certificate for the right to education on the name of every approved student and informs the Ministry of foreign affairs. Having received the certificate, the applicant transfers to the given bank account half of the tuition fee for the preparatory academic year. With the bank document for the transferred amount and the certificate the foreign citizen submits a letter at the Embassy of R Bulgaria in the corresponding country in order to be issued a visa.
RESIDENCIES
Foreign students can take residencies at the Medical Faculty- Sofia only full time if they have a Master degree diploma of higher education.
DOCUMENTS NEEDED FOR ENROLLMENT OF RESIDENTS
- Application addressed to the Rector of MU-Sofia containing short CV data and the desired specialty of the residency
- Two copies of the diploma of higher education, one of them with original stamps, translated in Bulgarian and legalized by the Bulgarian Embassy in the corresponding country where the diploma was issued.
- Medical certificate (original) issued within one month of applying, translated in Bulgarian and legalized.
- Two photos.
- Copy of the page of the identification document, showing the name, date and place of birth of the applicant.
- Documents concerning professional experience
- Written approval by the corresponding residency base.
ENROLLMENT OF DOCTORAL DEGREE CANDIDATES WHO ARE FOREIGN CITIZENS
Foreign citizens can study in MF-Sofia to acquire the scientific and educational degree ‘Doctor’ either full time or part time if they have a diploma of higher education with a Master degree in the following cases:
- On special occasions:
- according to intergovernmental agreements of educational, cultural and scientific exchange;
- according to Acts of the Council of Ministers
- In accordance with Art.95, p. 6 of the Law of Higher Education
- In accordance with Art.21,p.4 of the Law of Higher Education
Foreigners can apply for doctoral degree fellowship in accordance with the rules and regulations for enrolling Bulgarian citizens if:
- they have a status of permanent residents on the territory of Bulgaria
- they have a status of refugees
- they are citizens of member states of the European Union or the European Economic Zone
Persons with two citizenships one of which is Bulgarian can pass doctoral degree education in MF-Sofia, according to the clause of Art.95,p.8 of the Law of Higher Education. They pay 50% of the tuition fee, determined by the Council of Ministers for the education of foreign students.
Persons with Bulgarian nationality certified according to Act of the Council of Ministers No 103/1993 can pass a doctoral degree fellowship in the MF-Sofia under the following conditions:
- by paying 30% of the education fee for foreign students determined by the Council of Ministers according to Art.4,p.5 of Act of the Council of Ministers No 103/1993.
- If approved by the Ministry of Education and Science on topics approved by the corresponding minister, according to Art.5,p.1,2,3 of the Act of the Council of Ministers No103/1999 on the conditions of enrollment for Bulgarian citizens
The applicants submit the following documents:
- Application containing information about the applicant’s desires to work on a dissertation in a corresponding: scientific area, scientific specialty, scientific sub-specialty, the topic for the envisaged thesis,
- Short CV data, including the degree of language competence in the congress languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Russian).
- A copy of the higher education diploma showing the applicant holds a Master’s degree.
- A medical certificate issued within one month of the date of application and legalized by the relevant authorities of the country where the applicant comes from.
- For applicants with two citizenships, one of which is Bulgarian -a copy of the citizenship documents.
- For persons of Bulgarian nationality: birth certificate, christening certificate or another document of citizenship, a passport or another identity document, a document issued by an organization of a Bulgarian community abroad.
It is obligatory that the documents under points 2 and 3 should be translated in Bulgarian, legalized and stamped by the Bulgarian Embassy in the country where the person applies from.
